Is closet mold a DIY fix or professional problem?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall always feels a bit damp, and I’ve just found a patch of black spots on some of my shoes and the back wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, probably because the humidity has been so intense lately. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach from the supermarket, or is this a sign of a bigger problem that needs a professional?

It depends on the extent and cause. A small, surface-level patch on a non-porous material can often be managed with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution—bleach only masks the visible growth and doesn't address the root moisture. However, if the mold is on the wall itself or has penetrated porous items like shoes, and the closet consistently feels damp, this is a strong indicator of a larger issue.

In Dubai's high humidity, this dampness is likely due to condensation from the AC system or, more critically, a potential leak in the external wall's waterproofing. A DIY clean will only be temporary if the hidden moisture source isn't identified and corrected. For a recurring problem on an exterior wall, a professional inspection is warranted to diagnose the cause, whether it's inadequate insulation, a leaking pipe within the wall, or compromised building sealant. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source unseen. Resolving it may require coordination with your building management for structural repairs.
