Is AC mold causing my wife's constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little for a couple of months, and now I’m noticing black spots on the wall behind the wardrobe. My wife has had a constant stuffy nose and a cough that just won’t go away since it started. Is this definitely mold, and could it be the reason she’s been feeling so unwell?

The black spots and persistent leak strongly suggest mold growth. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, especially when condensation from a leak provides the necessary moisture. Your wife's symptoms—stuffy nose and persistent cough—are classic reactions to mold exposure for many individuals.

It's highly plausible the mold is the cause. Mold releases spores and microscopic fragments that irritate the respiratory tract, leading to allergy-like symptoms. These can persist as long as the exposure continues.

For a situation involving visible growth and health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. A certified inspector can identify the extent of the hidden growth, often within the AC unit itself or inside the wall cavity. The most definitive step is lab analysis of a tape or swab sample to identify the mold species, which confirms the presence and potential allergenicity.

In the UAE, remediation must follow strict guidelines like Dubai Municipality's Code of Practice to prevent cross-contamination. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach, as improper handling can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem. The leak must be repaired by an AC technician, and the affected wall area likely requires professional remediation to safely remove the contaminated material.
