Is black mold from AC making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black dust blowing out of the vent in our main bedroom. We’ve been waking up with sore throats and headaches for the past month, and my toddler’s cough just won’t go away. I wiped the vent and it was a thick, slimy black streak.
Is this definitely black mold and could it be causing our symptoms, or is it just regular Dubai dust buildup?

The black, slimy substance is almost certainly microbial growth, which in Dubai's climate is a common issue in AC systems due to condensation providing constant moisture. While often called "black mold," the specific type (e.g., Cladosporium, Aspergillus, or the more notorious Stachybotrys) must be identified by a lab culture to assess the actual risk.
Your symptoms—sore throats, headaches, and a persistent cough—are typical reactions to inhaling a high concentration of mold spores and microbial fragments from a contaminated unit. Infants and toddlers are particularly susceptible to these irritants. This is not just dust; dust is typically dry and powdery, not thick and slimy. For a definitive answer, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is needed. The samples are analyzed in a microbiology lab to identify the species and concentration, which dictates the required remediation protocol. In many cases, a thorough cleaning of the entire AC system (ducts, evaporator coils, drip pans) and addressing the source of moisture can resolve the issue and measurably reduce symptoms. Given your toddler's health, this is a prudent course of action. |
