Is bathroom mold a DIY job or need professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our ensuite bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, and I just found black spots spreading along the bottom of the wall behind the toilet and on the ceiling. The humidity has been brutal lately and I'm worried about my son's allergies. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a dehumidifier, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service here in Dubai?

That depends on the extent and underlying cause. For a small patch under 1 square meter, a DIY approach can work.
Use a dedicated mould remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and doesn't address the root problem. Scrub the area, but the real fix is controlling humidity. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small dehumidifier. Given Dubai's extreme humidity and constant AC use, the wall or ceiling cavity behind the tiles could be a hidden moisture reservoir, especially if the spots are spreading or on an exterior wall. This is a common issue here where condensation forms inside walls. If the mould returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area, or the musty smell persists, a professional assessment is needed. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water that you can't see. For a child with allergies, identifying the specific mould type through a lab test can also provide clarity on the health risk, as some species are more problematic than others. |
