Is black mold in my Dubai bathroom dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom. We're in a villa in Mirdif and it's been spreading ever since the humidity really kicked in last month. I wipe it away but it just comes back darker a few days later. Is this kind of mold actually dangerous for their health, and what's the *proper* way to get rid of it for good in this climate?

That black mold is likely Stachybotrys or Aspergillus, both of which are common in humid climates and can be problematic, especially for children. Their developing respiratory systems are more sensitive, and consistent exposure to mold spores can trigger coughing, wheezing, and allergic reactions, or worsen asthma.

Its persistence points to a chronic moisture issue, not just surface dirt. Simply wiping it away is a temporary fix because the mold's root structure (hyphae) remains embedded in the porous grout or drywall. In Dubai's high humidity, it will return within days as the spores reactivate.

The proper remediation requires a two-step approach: first, address the moisture source, and second, properly remove the mold. For a recurring problem in a villa, check the bathroom's ventilation. Run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting outside, not just into the ceiling void. A dehumidifier can help significantly between uses.

For removal, standard bleach is not recommended for porous surfaces as it doesn't kill the roots and can release more spores. Use a dedicated EPA-approved fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar, applying it and scrubbing thoroughly. However, if the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter) or keeps returning despite your efforts, the infestation is likely behind the tiles or within the wall.

In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the full extent and moisture source. A proper remediation involves containment to prevent spore spread, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment, not just cleaning. For health concerns with children, a lab test can identify the specific species and concentration to better assess the risk, which is a service our microbiology lab provides.
