Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the air in the room has felt really damp lately even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to handle this ourselves, and when should we call the building management to check for a leak?

Start by thoroughly cleaning the visible mold yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water, or a dedicated mold remover, and scrub the area. Allow it to dry completely. This addresses the surface growth you can see.
However, the underlying cause is likely a hidden leak or severe condensation. The damp air feeling and the mold's location on an external wall are strong indicators. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue where cool interior air from constant AC use meets the hot, humid external air, causing condensation within the wall cavity. You should notify your building management or landlord immediately to investigate for a potential leak from plumbing, a crack in the building envelope, or failed insulation. Under UAE tenancy law, structural and maintenance issues like this are typically the responsibility of the property owner. They need to locate and repair the moisture source; otherwise, the mold will return. For a small patch, a DIY clean may suffice if the source is fixed. If the dampness persists or the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, a professional assessment is recommended to check for hidden growth inside the wall. Persistent, unresolved moisture problems often require a specialist with moisture meters and thermal imaging to properly diagnose the leak's origin. |
