How to permanently remove and prevent black mold in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches appearing in the back corner of our walk-in wardrobe where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Jumeirah, and the air just feels damp in that spot. We run the AC constantly but it doesn't seem to help that one area. What's the best way to clean this and stop it from coming back for good?

Black mold in a wardrobe on an exterior wall points to a consistent moisture source, likely condensation from thermal bridging. The constant UAE AC cools the interior air, but the hot villa wall creates a cold spot where humidity from the air condenses, providing the water mold needs to grow.
For removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold-cleaning solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can push spores into the air. After scrubbing, allow the area to dry completely. Permanent prevention requires addressing the moisture. First, identify if the issue is condensation or a hidden leak. An infrared thermal imaging camera during a professional inspection can pinpoint the exact cold spot and moisture source. To reduce condensation, improve air circulation in the cupboard by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the door ajar. A reusable desiccant dehumidifier placed inside can help absorb excess moisture. For a long-term solution, the wall itself may need to be addressed. Applying an anti-condensation or thermal insulating paint to that specific wall can create a barrier, preventing the surface from becoming cold enough for water to form. In many Dubai villas, this is the most effective permanent fix. Given its location and persistence, a professional assessment is recommended to confirm the mold type and ensure the moisture issue is correctly diagnosed and resolved, preventing it from spreading or recurring. |
