How to clean and prevent AC wall mold?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for a couple of weeks, and I just spotted a few small black patches on the wall behind the headboard. We keep the villa pretty cool, but the humidity has been brutal lately. What’s the best way to clean this and what can I do to stop it from coming back, especially with the constant AC use?

Black wall mold near an AC vent is a common issue in Dubai's high humidity, caused by condensation from the cold air meeting warm room temperatures. The best approach depends on the size and cause.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then dry it thoroughly. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the root moisture problem.

However, since the mold is inside the wall cavity behind the headboard, the problem is likely more extensive than what's visible. This typically requires a professional assessment. The AC unit's drain line may be clogged, causing excess moisture, or the wall itself may have an insulation issue leading to condensation. A thorough inspection can identify the exact moisture source.

To prevent recurrence, ensure your AC is set to a temperature that minimizes excessive condensation; 24°C is a common recommendation. Run a dehumidifier in the bedroom, especially during the more humid summer months. Most critically, have your AC unit serviced regularly to ensure the drain pan and condensate line are clear and flowing properly, as this is the primary cause of such moisture issues. For persistent problems, a professional duct cleaning and antimicrobial coating of the affected area may be necessary.
