Is black mold in my bedroom closet serious?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, I'm worried it's gotten worse behind the clothes. What's the best way to clean this myself, or is this a situation where I absolutely need to call my landlord or a professional company?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a concern that warrants attention, especially given Dubai's high humidity. The seriousness depends on the extent and type. A small patch on the surface is often manageable, but its location on an exterior wall suggests a potential moisture issue from condensation or a minor leak, which can allow it to grow unseen.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can clean it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves. Use a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent, not bleach, as bleach only removes the color and does not address the root moisture. Scrub the area thoroughly and dry it completely with a fan. However, this is only a temporary fix if the underlying moisture problem isn't resolved.

Given it's on an exterior wall and you suspect hidden growth, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of water intrusion, which is critical. In Dubai, persistent humidity and year-round AC use can create constant condensation points within walls that are not visible.

Your landlord is typically responsible for addressing structural issues causing moisture, like leaks or inadequate insulation. For your health and to document the issue, it is reasonable to inform them and request an assessment. If the problem is extensive, a professional remediation company with a microbiology lab can identify the mold species and provide a verifiable, data-driven cleanup plan to ensure it is properly resolved.
