How to remove bathroom black mold and report to landlord« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's started growing in the corner of our master bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it creeping up behind the toilet, probably because that area never dries out properly. It's in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle and I'm really worried about their health. What's the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I be reporting this to my landlord or building management first?

Black mold in bathrooms is common in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from showers, especially in areas with poor ventilation like behind a toilet. The persistent dampness creates an ideal environment for growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a vinegar solution or a commercial mold remover. Wear a mask and gloves. However, since your children are already showing respiratory symptoms like coughing, a DIY approach is not advisable. Disturbing the mold can release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially worsening their irritation. The most effective and safe solution is professional remediation. They will contain the area, remove the mold at its source, and address the underlying moisture problem to prevent its return.

You should report this to your landlord or building management immediately. Under Dubai rental law (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are responsible for maintaining the property's structure and ensuring it is habitable, which includes addressing persistent dampness and mold issues that affect health. Document the mold with photos and note the timeline of your children's symptoms. The building management may also need to investigate if the moisture is stemming from a leak in a common pipe or a structural issue.

Given the health concerns, a professional inspection can identify the exact mold species and the root cause of the moisture, which is critical for a permanent fix. In many JVC apartments, the constant AC use can create significant condensation if the unit is unbalanced or drains are blocked, a common issue a certified technician can diagnose.
