Can I clean black shower mold myself in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been turning black for a while now, and it’s starting to spread to the ceiling in the corner. We keep the exhaust fan on, but our apartment in Jumeirah Lakes Towers is just so humid all the time. Is this something I can tackle myself with a good cleaner from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company?

For surface-level black mold on grout, a thorough DIY cleaning with a dedicated mold-killing cleaner can be effective. The constant high humidity in Dubai apartments, especially in JLT near the water, means the root cause is persistent moisture that simple cleaning won't solve.
Start by scrubbing the affected grout with a stiff brush and a commercial mold remover or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Always wear gloves, a mask, and ensure the area is well-ventilated. For the ceiling, check if the exhaust fan is actually moving sufficient air; many older units are underpowered for Dubai's climate. If the mold returns within a few weeks, if the area is larger than one square meter, or if it has penetrated behind the tiles or into the drywall (indicated by soft, crumbling walls), a professional assessment is needed. They can identify the moisture source—often condensation within walls or a minor leak—and perform remediation that includes antimicrobial treatment to prevent rapid regrowth. In severe cases, a lab test can identify the mold species, which is crucial for individuals with allergies or respiratory sensitivities. |
