Can I remove black shower mold or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots over the last few months, and it’s spreading to the ceiling corner. I’ve tried wiping it with vinegar, but it just comes back worse a week later, especially with all this humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional to stop it for good?

Black spots on grout and the ceiling are likely mold, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. Vinegar often fails because it doesn't address the moisture source or penetrate porous surfaces.

For a small, surface-level patch, a stronger approach using a dedicated mold-removing cleaner or a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can be tried. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterward. However, if the mold returns quickly, has spread to the drywall ceiling, or has a musty odor, a DIY fix is insufficient. This indicates a persistent moisture problem and potential growth behind the tiles.

In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the root cause, which could be a hidden leak or inadequate ventilation. Remediation involves containment, removal of contaminated porous materials like grout or drywall, and addressing the humidity source. For verification, a post-remediation test from an independent lab is the only way to confirm it's truly resolved.
