Should I clean this black mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of this black fuzzy stuff I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's a big patch, maybe two feet wide, and we've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we moved the furniture to rearrange. Should I try to clean this myself with bleach or is this a job for a professional cleaning company?

For a patch that large and with respiratory symptoms present, professional assessment is strongly advised. In Dubai's climate, the visible growth is often just the surface indicator; the main issue is the hidden moisture source within the wall or behind it, which must be identified and resolved to prevent recurrence.
Bleach is not recommended. It can lighten the visible stain but does not kill the root structure of the mold on porous surfaces like drywall, and its fumes can worsen respiratory irritation. DIY attempts often aerosolize spores, spreading them to other areas of your home. The coughing in your children is a significant indicator that professional inspection and remediation are warranted. A certified inspector will identify the mold species and, crucially, use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the water intrusion source—often condensation from AC units, pipe leaks, or humidity seepage common in UAE villas. Proper remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA-filtered air scrubbers, and safe removal of affected porous materials. For verifiable results, ensure any company you hire provides before-and-after lab reports to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels, not just a visual clean. |
