Can I remove black shower mold myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black fuzzy spots forming in the grout between the tiles above our shower in Al Barsha. The AC is always on, but the bathroom window is small and the room never feels completely dry. Is this something I can tackle myself with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or should I call in a professional cleaner to deal with it properly?

Small black spots in shower grout are often a surface mold or mildew, common in Dubai's humid climate where bathrooms rarely dry out completely due to constant AC use. You can often manage small patches yourself.

A diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can lighten the discoloration. Apply it directly to the grout, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush and rinse thoroughly. However, bleach only removes the visible stain on non-porous surfaces; it may not kill the root structure embedded deep within the porous grout, meaning the mold can return.

For a recurring or larger problem (covering over a square foot), the moisture source needs to be addressed. This is where a professional assessment is valuable. They can identify if the issue is simply surface humidity or a hidden leak in the plumbing behind the tiles, which is a more serious concern. In many villa buildings in Al Barsha, poor bathroom ventilation exacerbates the problem. A proper remediation includes diagnosing the moisture cause, removing the affected grout, and applying a professional-grade antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth, followed by re-grouting with a mold-inhibitor product.
