How to permanently fix mold behind sofa in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's an interior wall, and with the AC always running, I'm really surprised. I want to clean it but I'm more concerned about it coming back and affecting our health. What's the best way to permanently fix this moisture issue in a Dubai apartment?

Moisture is the cause, and the mold is just the symptom. Permanently fixing it requires addressing the source of that moisture, which in Dubai apartments is almost always condensation from air conditioning or a hidden leak.

First, move the sofa away from the wall completely. In our climate, furniture placed against an exterior or cold interior wall creates a dead air space. The wall becomes a cold surface where moisture from the humid indoor air condenses, providing the perfect damp environment for mold. This is exceptionally common.

For immediate cleaning, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can clean the visible growth from a non-porous painted surface. However, this is only a temporary measure if the moisture source remains.

The permanent fix involves a two-part approach:
1. Eliminate the Moisture Source: Ensure there is a consistent air gap of at least 2-3 inches between your sofa and the wall to allow air to circulate and the wall surface to maintain a more consistent temperature, preventing condensation. Also, verify your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning; an over-cooling unit can create excessive temperature differentials that lead to condensation.
2. Remediate the Mold: For a small, isolated patch, thorough cleaning may suffice. However, since the mold is on an interior wall, there is a possibility the condensation issue has caused moisture to wick into the drywall or plaster itself. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or has a musty odor, the wall material itself may be compromised.

In such cases, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the problem behind the surface. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness. Remediation for a persistent issue often involves removing and replacing the affected section of drywall to ensure the mold is truly gone for good.
