How to treat hidden black mold behind wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah. It must have been hidden there for a while, and I'm worried it's making my allergies worse. What's the most effective way to deal with this properly, and should I call a professional or is it something I can handle myself?

Hidden black mold behind furniture is common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use, which can create condensation on cooler exterior walls. The most effective approach is to first assess the extent of the problem, which is often larger than the visible spots.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water, scrub the area, and allow it to dry completely. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and can push spores into the air. However, since this has been hidden for two years and is likely causing your allergies, the mold has probably penetrated the wall material. For a suspected larger infestation, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see inside the wall cavity, as the structure behind may be compromised. In many cases, the drywall itself needs to be removed and replaced to fully resolve the issue. A proper remediation will also identify and correct the source of moisture, such as a leaking pipe or thermal bridging from the AC, to prevent it from returning. Companies with their own microbiology labs can test the mold to identify the species, which helps determine the necessary safety protocols during removal. |
