Mold in Dubai villa closet: urgent professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has had a persistent damp smell in the master bedroom closet for about a month, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find several dark, fuzzy patches on the back wall and on a leather bag. With how humid it's been lately, it seems to be spreading. Is this something I need to call a professional cleaner for immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

The dark fuzzy patches in your closet are a clear sign of active mold growth, which is very common in Dubai villas due to high humidity and year-round AC use creating condensation. Given the spread and the damp smell, this is not a surface issue you can simply wipe away. The mold has likely penetrated the wall material itself.

For your health and to protect the structure of your home, a professional inspection is strongly recommended before the weekend. In Dubai's climate, mold can spread quickly behind walls, especially in closets against external walls where temperature differences cause condensation. A certified inspector will use a moisture meter to find the water source—often a small AC leak or external seepage—and take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the species. This is critical, as some types require specific remediation protocols.

While you wait, increase air circulation in the room with a fan, but avoid disturbing the mold yourself. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate spores and only bleaches the color, leaving the root structure intact. The remediation process itself involves containment, HEPA filtration, and removal of affected porous materials like drywall or insulation. Verifying that the company holds a DHA-approved pest control license is a good baseline for legitimacy.
