How to safely clean black mold from kids' room?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’m getting worried. I pulled out some toys from the built-in storage under our window in the kids' bedroom and found a patch of black mold on the wall behind them, probably from the condensation. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without risking my family’s health?

The safest approach depends on the size. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with precautions. For anything larger, or if it’s inside the wall cavity, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the full extent and prevent spores from spreading through your home during cleaning.
First, keep your children and anyone with asthma or allergies out of the room during and after cleaning until everything is dry. Open the window for ventilation and seal the room off from the rest of the house by closing the door and placing a towel at the bottom. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Mix a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water. Do not mix bleach with ammonia or other cleaners. Lightly mist the moldy area with water first to suppress spores, then scrub with the bleach solution using a stiff brush. Wipe the area clean with disposable cloths and place all used cleaning materials in a sealed plastic bag for disposal. Allow the area to dry completely. The root cause here is almost certainly condensation from the window and AC, a very common issue in Dubai's climate. After cleaning, use a dehumidifier or keep the AC running consistently to lower humidity. Improve air circulation around the window and ensure your AC unit is serviced regularly to manage moisture. Consider moving toys away from that wall or using moisture-resistant storage. If the coughing persists after cleaning or you see the mold return quickly, the issue may be more extensive within the wall. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify hidden dampness, and air testing can identify if spore levels are elevated. |
