Found mold in Dubai villa closet: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Mirdif villa for 2 years and just noticed a huge patch of black and green mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It must have been growing for a while but we only found it while doing a deep clean. I'm really worried about our health and the damage to the walls. What's the most effective way to handle this ourselves, and when should we definitely call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

For a large patch of mold discovered behind items in a closet, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The size and hidden nature suggest a significant moisture issue, and improper DIY handling can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem.

Start by identifying and stopping the moisture source. In Mirdif villas, this is often condensation from an AC duct running through the ceiling void above the closet, a small leak from an adjacent bathroom, or high humidity trapped in an enclosed space. Move clothing away and improve air circulation immediately.

For a small area (less than 1m²), you can clean with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. However, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or plaster, the porous material likely needs to be removed and replaced, which is a job for professionals.

Call a professional company if the affected area is larger than 1m², if you suspect HVAC involvement, or if household members experience persistent respiratory issues. Dubai's high humidity can cause mold to regrow quickly if the underlying moisture problem isn't professionally diagnosed and resolved. A reputable firm will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source and provide a protocol that includes containment and air filtration to prevent cross-contamination, followed by independent verification that the space is safe.
