How to remove black mold and stop humidity in closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The room always feels a bit more humid than the rest of the apartment in Al Barsha, even with the AC running constantly. I'm really worried it's going to spread or affect our health. What's the most effective way to remove it for good and what can I do to stop the humidity that's causing it in the first place?

First, address the moisture source. In Al Barsha, interior wall mold often stems from condensation due to the high contrast between Dubai's outdoor humidity and your AC's cold air. Check if the closet is packed tight or pushed against the wall, blocking air circulation from the room's AC vent. Leave a small gap between stored items and the wall and ensure the closet door is left ajar periodically to allow conditioned air to flow through.
For removal, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Small patches (under ~1 sq. ft.) can often be cleaned with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Scrub the area thoroughly, let it dry completely, and dispose of any contaminated porous materials like cardboard boxes. If the mold returns quickly, covers a larger area, or has a musty odor, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity, requiring professional assessment. Remediation typically involves isolating the area, removing affected drywall or insulation, and using HEPA filtration to prevent spores from spreading. Dubai Municipality and DHA have guidelines for proper mold remediation to ensure it’s done safely and effectively. To control humidity long-term, consider using a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. For the entire room, verify your AC unit is correctly sized and functioning; an overworked or faulty unit may not be removing enough moisture from the air. An HVAC inspection can identify if the drain pan is clogged or the refrigerant level is low, both common issues here that lead to excess indoor humidity. |
