How to clean and prevent mold in a dark, damp closet?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It gets zero sunlight and feels a bit damp to the touch, especially after running the AC non-stop all summer. I'm worried it will spread. What's the best way to clean this small area and prevent it from coming back for good?

Clean the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, scrubbing gently to avoid dispersing spores. Wear a mask and gloves. For prevention, the absolute priority is reducing humidity. A small, plug-in dehumidifier or desiccant bags inside the closet are effective first steps.

The dampness you feel is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the cold interior wall and Dubai's humid air, worsened by the lack of airflow. After cleaning, ensure the closet door is left ajar regularly to allow air circulation from the room. If the wall is an exterior wall, check for any hidden leaks from AC drain lines or plumbing, which are common culprits.

If the spots return after cleaning and humidity control, or if the area is larger than one square foot, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source definitively. In many Dubai properties, the root cause is a breach in the building envelope or an HVAC issue that requires targeted repair. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping to find the exact problem, as surface cleaning alone will not stop recurrence if there's a hidden water intrusion.
