Mold found behind sofa: clean myself or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a small patch of black mold in the corner where the wall meets the floor, probably from a slow leak I hadn't noticed. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold inspector to check the whole house?

Given the symptoms and the discovery, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The patch you see is likely just the visible part of a larger problem; mold spreads its root system (hyphae) deep into porous materials like drywall and concrete, which bleach cannot reach. In Dubai's humid climate, hidden condensation and AC-related moisture issues are common drivers of such growth.

Cleaning the surface with a detergent solution can remove the staining spores, but it won't address the root cause or the potential contamination in your AC system, which could be circulating spores and contributing to the coughing. A proper inspection involves moisture mapping to find the source and air/o-surface sampling to identify the species and concentration levels. This data is crucial, as some species pose higher health risks than others.

For a villa in Jumeirah, where construction standards and materials vary, an inspection can also assess if the wall cavity is affected. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines on indoor air quality and dampness, and a professional assessment provides documentation that may be required for landlord communications or insurance purposes. While a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous tile might be a DIY fix, your combination of health symptoms and a hidden leak on porous walls warrants a diagnostic approach.
