How to remove closet mold and prevent future moisture?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has developed a few small patches of black mold on the back wall. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when we were doing a deep clean last weekend, and we're worried it's been there a while. The room always feels a bit more humid than the rest of the apartment, even with the AC running constantly. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and what can I do to stop the moisture from building up in that specific closet again?

Your situation is common in Dubai due to high ambient humidity and AC systems creating temperature differentials on interior walls. The mold on the closet wall is a symptom of condensation buildup, not a leak.

For safe removal of small patches, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then wipe it dry. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root structure. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during cleaning.

The key is addressing the moisture. The closet's interior location is likely colder than the room, causing humid air to condense on its surfaces. This is amplified by keeping the closet tightly shut. Leave the closet doors ajar for several hours each day to allow air circulation. A small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber (like silica gel packs) placed inside can measurably reduce humidity levels.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, returns after cleaning, or you experience persistent musty odors or health symptoms, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use thermal imaging to identify the exact condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the problem, which is crucial for a lasting solution. In many cases, improving the apartment's overall ventilation and ensuring your AC unit is properly serviced and draining correctly will resolve the underlying humidity issue.
