How to remove mold from villa wall without damaging paint?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's been really humid lately and I'm worried it's mold. How can I tell for sure and what's the best way to get rid of it for good without damaging the paint?

Black spots spreading behind a wardrobe in a Jumeirah villa during humid weather are almost certainly mold, a common issue here due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The first step is to confirm it. A DIY test with a cotton swab dipped in diluted bleach dabbed on a spot will lighten mold but not dirt or soot.

For a small patch, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a mild detergent and water solution, or a mix of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Scrub gently with a soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging the paint, then dry the area thoroughly with a fan immediately after. The key is not just cleaning but eliminating the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation, and ensure your AC is set to a consistent, lower humidity level.

However, since the mold is spreading and located behind furniture where a hidden moisture issue could persist, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the wall's condition. In villas, this can indicate a more serious problem like a small plumbing leak in the wall or insufficient insulation causing condensation. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the root cause, which DIY methods often miss. For verified results, remediation should be followed by post-cleaning surface swab tests from an accredited lab to confirm spore removal. Without addressing the underlying moisture, the mold will almost certainly return.
