Is AC mold making my child sick? Who to call?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Park seems to be leaking a little, and now we've found black spots spreading on the wall behind the kids' bunk bed. My youngest has been sneezing non-stop for the past week and I'm really worried it's connected. Is this definitely toxic mold and who should I call first, a cleaning company or an AC technician to fix the root cause?

The black spots and persistent sneezing are strong indicators of a mold issue, likely caused by the AC leak. High humidity and condensation from Dubai's climate create ideal conditions for mold growth. While not all black mold is the highly toxic 'Stachybotrys,' any mold can cause allergic reactions, congestion, and respiratory irritation, especially in children.

You must address the root cause first. Call a certified AC technician to repair the leak immediately; without fixing the moisture source, the mold will return even if cleaned. Once the leak is fixed, you need a professional mold inspection. They can identify the species through lab analysis to determine the specific risk and the correct remediation method. Simply cleaning the visible spots often disturbs the spores and spreads them further without addressing the hidden growth inside your wall cavity.

For a situation involving a child's health and structural penetration, a specialized remediation company with microbial testing capabilities is necessary, not a general cleaner. They will contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and verify with post-remediation testing that the spore count is back to a safe level.
