How to remove black mold from bedroom wall in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten worse really quickly. What's the most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, and should we be worried about it coming from inside the wall?

The black spots are likely mould growth, a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form. For a small area (under one square meter), you can tackle it yourself. Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water or a diluted bleach solution (1:10 with water) in a spray bottle. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Spray the area, let it sit for 15 minutes, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry the area thoroughly immediately after.

Crucially, you must address the moisture source. In a villa, this is often condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature (around 22-24°C) to minimize this effect. Improve air circulation in the closet by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open. A dehumidifier can also help significantly.

Given the mould is on an exterior wall and appeared quickly, there is a possibility of a more significant moisture issue within the wall cavity, such as a minor leak or insufficient insulation. If the mould returns after cleaning and moisture control, or if the affected area is large, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls, which is the only way to rule out a hidden problem. Companies with their own microbiology labs can also identify the mould type to better assess any potential health risks, which is particularly important for families.
