Can I remove dangerous black mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. The wall feels damp and it's spread about the size of a dinner plate since I first spotted it a couple of days ago. Is this something I can tackle with vinegar and bleach from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

Attempting removal yourself isn't advised, especially with children showing symptoms and the mold spreading quickly. This suggests an active moisture source, which DIY methods won't fix. In Dubai's high humidity, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading them further through the AC system and potentially worsening the cough.

Supermarket bleach and vinegar are surface-level solutions. They may lighten the stain but won't kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating the damp gypsum board, which is common in UAE villas. The mold will almost certainly return without addressing the underlying dampness and performing a proper antimicrobial treatment.

For a case like this—spreading, damp, and with health symptoms—a professional assessment is critical. They will identify the moisture source (often condensation from an AC line, a leak, or rising damp), contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, remove the affected building material, and treat the area with specialized biocides. A certified company should also provide before-and-after air quality or surface swab lab results to confirm the space is safe. This is the standard for verifiable remediation, not just cleaning.
