Can I clean black mold in closet or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has started to get these black speckles, and our clothes have a damp smell we can't shake. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it getting worse since the weather got really humid last month. I'm worried it's spreading behind the clothes. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach spray, or do I need to call a professional company to look at it?

That pattern of black speckles on an interior wall with a persistent damp smell strongly suggests active mould growth, likely fueled by the recent high humidity. In Dubai's climate, interior cold walls (like those backing onto AC chases or external walls) are prime spots for condensation, creating the moisture mould needs.

For a small, surface-level area (less than about one square meter), you can attempt cleaning with a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach does not kill mould roots on porous surfaces and its fumes are hazardous indoors. However, if the smell persists or you suspect growth behind the wall, it has likely spread into the drywall itself. In this case, professional assessment is necessary to determine the moisture source and extent.

A certified inspector can use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls without unnecessary damage. Remediation involves containing the area, removing compromised materials like affected drywall or insulation, and HEPA vacuuming to capture spores. Simply spraying a surface cleaner will not address the root cause or hidden colonies.

The key is verifying the company's methodology. Reputable firms provide before-and-after testing from an accredited lab to confirm the spore count has been returned to safe levels, not just a visual clean. This is the standard for verifiable results in the UAE.
