Urgent to treat black mold in humid bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots on the ceiling above the shower in our Marina apartment. It’s been extra humid lately and the smell is getting stronger. How quickly do I need to get a professional to look at this before it becomes a major health or repair issue?

Black mould in a humid bathroom is a concern that should be addressed promptly. In Dubai's climate, with high humidity and constant air conditioning use, the conditions for mould growth are ideal. The increased smell and visible spots indicate it is actively growing.

For a small area (less than one square meter), you can often manage it yourself. Wear a mask and gloves, and scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover. The critical step is to fix the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is venting properly. Wipe down wet surfaces and consider a dehumidifier if the smell persists.

Given that it's on the ceiling, the issue might be inadequate ventilation or a condensation problem from the AC duct above. If the spots return quickly after cleaning, cover a larger area, or if you notice persistent musty odors or any health symptoms like worsened allergies, a professional assessment is recommended. They can identify the species and source, whether it's surface condensation or a hidden leak, which is common in apartment buildings. For rental properties in Dubai, landlords are typically responsible for resolving issues related to building integrity like leaks.
