Black mold in shower grout: urgent or DIY cleanable?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some small black spots in the grout between the tiles near the shower in our Marina apartment. I thought it was just dirt at first, but it won't scrub off and there's a damp, earthy smell that’s been getting stronger. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a good cleaner?

Black mold in shower grout is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. Small, surface-level spots can often be managed with a thorough DIY cleaning. Use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar, scrub with a stiff brush, and ensure the area is completely dried afterward.

However, the presence of a persistent damp, earthy smell suggests the mold may have penetrated deeper behind the tiles or into the substrate. In the humid climate of a Marina apartment, this underlying moisture can fuel continued growth even after surface cleaning. For cases involving a persistent odor or if the discoloration does not improve with cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent of the issue and identify any hidden moisture sources. A proper assessment can determine if remediation is needed to prevent it from returning.
