can I remove this black mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside and it's been spreading slowly since the humidity started rising a few weeks ago.
Is this something I can tackle myself with vinegar from Carrefour, or is it serious enough that I should call one of those professional cleaning companies?

That depends on the size and type of mold. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) caused by condensation, a vinegar solution can be effective for cleaning the visible growth. However, it's a temporary fix if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.
In Dubai's climate, that wall likely has condensation forming due to the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the humid exterior. Simply wiping the surface won't stop it from returning. For porous materials like drywall or the backing of the closet, the mold's root structure (mycelium) can penetrate deep where vinegar cannot reach, making regrowth probable. A professional inspection is recommended if the area is larger than a square foot, has a musty odor, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities. They can identify the moisture source—often poor insulation or a hidden leak—and confirm the mold type through lab analysis, which is crucial as some species require specific remediation protocols. DIY attempts on larger infestations can disturb spores and spread them further. The goal is to fix the cause, not just clean the symptom. |
