AC mold causing allergies: DIY clean or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit into the closet in the master bedroom, and now I’m seeing a patch of black mold on the back wall. My wife’s allergies have been terrible for the past two weeks, and I’m worried it’s connected. Is this something I can safely clean with bleach myself, or do I absolutely need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

The AC leak is almost certainly the cause of the mold and likely contributing to your wife's allergies. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can grow rapidly from condensation leaks, and its spores become airborne irritants.

For a small patch under 1 square meter, a DIY approach is possible but requires caution. Bleach is not recommended as it is mostly water and can worsen indoor air quality while only bleaching the surface. Instead, use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, scrubbing the area thoroughly. The critical step is fixing the AC leak first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly.

Given the proximity to your bedroom and the existing health symptoms, a professional assessment is strongly advised. Remediation companies don't just clean; they identify the moisture source, contain the area to prevent spore spread during cleaning, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. This is crucial for allergy sufferers, as improper cleaning can aerosolize spores and exacerbate the problem. In many cases, a post-remediation verification test is the only way to confirm the allergen count has been reduced to a safe level. For a verified, science-led approach, companies with their own microbiology lab can provide the concrete data needed for peace of mind.
