Safely remove bathroom mold with babies at home?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it’s from the black mold that’s been growing in the grout between the bathroom tiles. It’s our main bathroom in the apartment, which doesn’t have a window, and with the humidity lately, it’s just gotten worse. What is the safest and most effective way to clean it, considering I have a toddler and a baby who are always in there for bath time?

Bathroom mold, particularly black mold in grout, can definitely irritate airways and cause increased coughing, especially in young children and infants. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and a windowless bathroom creates a perfect environment for it to thrive.

For immediate cleaning with babies at home, safety is the priority. Avoid bleach-based products, as the fumes can be more harmful than the mold itself in a poorly ventilated space. Instead, use a solution of distilled white vinegar or a hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner. These are less toxic and effective on surface mold. Scrub the grout with a stiff brush, wear an N95 mask to avoid inhaling spores, and ensure the room is as ventilated as possible—run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour after cleaning.

To prevent recurrence, controlling humidity is essential. Run the exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet tiles and surfaces with a squeegee. Consider a small dehumidifier for the room if humidity consistently exceeds 60%. For persistent mold that returns quickly or appears on drywall, the issue may be deeper within the walls. In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify any hidden moisture sources, as DIY cleaning will only provide a temporary solution.
