Black and green mold found, is professional inspection needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I just discovered a patch of black and greenish stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from all the humidity. Is it worth getting a professional mold inspection, or can I handle this myself with a bleach solution?

Given the location, color, and your family's symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Self-treating with bleach is a surface-level fix that often fails to address the underlying moisture source, and the disturbance can release a high concentration of spores into your indoor air, potentially worsening your children's coughing.

Black and green discoloration often indicates a mixed colony, which could include species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus that are common in Dubai's humid climate and known respiratory irritants. The issue is almost certainly the hidden condensation and dampness behind the wardrobe, a chronic problem in villas here due to our 50-90% humidity levels and year-round AC use creating temperature differentials.

A proper inspection doesn't just identify the visible mold; it uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the water intrusion or condensation source within the wall cavity. For a case like this, a lab analysis of a tape-lift or air sample is the only way to definitively identify the species present and assess the potential health risk to your family. The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on indoor air quality and dampness, and a professional assessment provides the documentation needed if remediation is required.

Handling a small, surface-level patch on a non-porous tile might be a DIY task, but for a suspected colony on porous walls, coupled with health symptoms, the risk of improper handling is too high. The most practical step is to get a diagnostic inspection from a company with a microbiology lab to understand what you're dealing with before any cleaning begins.
