How to clean and prevent mold on leather in humid closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the inside wall has developed these small black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there. It’s been humid lately in our Jumeirah apartment, and I’m worried the lack of airflow is causing mold. What’s the best way to clean this and prevent it from happening again without having to run the AC 24/7?

First, gently wipe the leather items with a soft, dry cloth to remove any loose spores. For cleaning, use a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to three parts distilled water, lightly applied with a microfiber cloth. Always test this on a small, hidden area first. Avoid harsh chemicals or soaking the leather, as this can cause damage. Allow the items to air dry completely away from direct sunlight before storing them again.

The issue is almost certainly due to high humidity and stagnant air inside the enclosed closet, a very common problem in Dubai's climate where external humidity condenses on cooler interior walls. To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. Improve airflow by leaving the closet door ajar regularly and not overpacking it. Consider using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel packs or a small, electric desiccant dehumidifier placed inside the closet. These are far more effective and safer for your belongings than chemical-based products.

For the apartment itself, ensure your AC is properly maintained and set to a consistent temperature, even when you're out, to help manage overall humidity levels. Running it on "dry mode" can be more energy-efficient than full cooling if humidity is the main concern.

If the mold growth is extensive, has penetrated deeply into the leather, or you notice a musty odor or spots returning on walls, the closet may have a more serious condensation issue requiring professional assessment. In such cases, a certified inspection can identify hidden moisture problems and proper remediation protocols to protect your health and property.
