Black mold behind wardrobe; specialist or cleaner for fast fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it’s gotten worse. What’s the fastest way to get this treated properly and who should I call, a regular cleaner or a specialist?

This is a classic case of wall condensation leading to mold growth, very common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant temperature differential between AC-cooled interiors and the hot exterior walls. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with no air circulation, allowing moisture to condense and mold to flourish.
You absolutely need a specialist, not a regular cleaner. A regular cleaner will only wipe the visible surface, which addresses nothing. The mold's root system (hyphae) remains deep within the plaster and paint, guaranteeing it will return, often worse than before. A proper mold remediation specialist will first identify and correct the moisture source—often insufficient insulation on that external wall—and then perform the containment and removal to industry standards. For a fast and proper fix, the process should involve: isolating the area to prevent spore spread, safely removing the contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, treating the wall with antimicrobial solutions, and applying a mold-resistant primer before repainting. The goal is to make the environment uninhabitable for mold to return. Look for a company with certifications like IICRC and, crucially, one that operates its own microbiology lab. This is key because they should test to identify the mold type and provide a post-remediation verification (clearance test) to prove the spore count inside the treated area is lower than the count outside. This documented evidence is your only guarantee the job was done correctly. |
