Black mold in closet: DIY or contact Dubai Marina management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels damp to the touch. The strange thing is, the rest of the room seems completely fine.
What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I immediately contact my building management in Dubai Marina?

This specific situation – a damp patch on an exterior wall in a Dubai Marina apartment – strongly suggests a hidden leak or a condensation issue within the wall cavity. Given the building's age and proximity to the sea, persistent humidity can cause condensation on cold spots, especially where insulation might be compromised.
Your first step should be to contact your building management. Under Dubai regulations, the structural integrity of the building, including the external envelope and common water lines, is their responsibility. A leak from an adjacent apartment's bathroom, a cracked pipe in the wall, or a failing external sealant is a common cause, and they are obligated to investigate. Do not attempt a DIY fix on the wall itself, as you could void warranties or miss the root cause. For the visible mold on the surface, you can carefully clean it with a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is only a temporary measure for the surface growth; it will return if the moisture source isn't fixed. Immediately remove the affected winter clothing and launder them thoroughly to prevent spore spread. Once management has identified and repaired the leak, a professional assessment is wise to confirm the mold hasn't spread inside the wall. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to verify the cavity is dry. In many cases, simply fixing the leak and allowing the area to dry completely resolves the problem, but verification is key for peace of mind. |
