How to clean mold from AC leak in JLT?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah Lake Towers has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below the unit for a couple of months. I just moved a side table and found a small patch of black, fuzzy mold on the carpet and the wall behind it. I’m worried about it spreading, especially with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to clean this up properly and who should I call to fix the AC leak to make sure it doesn't come back?

Black mold growth from an AC leak is a common issue in Dubai's humid climate, especially in areas like JLT where condensation is constant. The first step is to stop the moisture source; you'll need an HVAC technician to repair the leak. For the mold, the cleanup method depends on the size and material.
For a small patch on a hard surface like a wall, a solution of detergent and water can be effective for removal. On porous materials like carpet and its underpad, cleaning is often not sufficient. If the mold has penetrated, the affected section of carpet and padding will likely need to be cut out and discarded to prevent spores from spreading through the AC system. Given the mold is on both the wall and carpet, and due to the persistent moisture over months, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Spores can become airborne during cleaning, and hidden growth inside the wall cavity is a possibility. The humidity will cause it to return unless the leak is fixed and the area is thoroughly dried. For the AC repair, contact a licensed HVAC company to fix the drain line or condensation pan leak. For proper mold remediation that includes containment, safe removal, and verification that the space is dry and clean, you need a specialist. Look for a Dubai-based company that follows IICRC S520 standards and can provide before-and-after testing data from an independent lab to confirm the job is done correctly. |
