Should I remove black mold myself or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately in Dubai, it seems to have gotten worse. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call the building management first?

It depends on the size of the patch. For a small area (under one square foot/30cm x 30cm), you can attempt to clean it yourself safely. For anything larger, or if it's recurring, a professional inspection is advised to find the moisture source.
For a DIY attempt, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water). Ensure the room is well-ventilated. Do not attempt if you have respiratory issues. Given the wall faces the outside, the moisture is likely from condensation or a small leak in the building envelope, which is common with Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. Simply cleaning the mold will not fix the problem; the underlying moisture must be addressed. You should notify building management regardless. In many Dubai buildings, the responsibility for structural issues like external wall leaks lies with them. They are obligated to investigate and repair the source of the intrusion to prevent it from happening again. A professional inspection can document the cause, which is crucial for getting the building management to take action. |
