Can I clean black shower grout myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and there's a really strong, damp smell that hits me every time I walk in. It's in our en-suite, so the bedroom is starting to smell a little musty too. Given the humidity here, especially at night, is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I try to clean it myself this weekend?

Black grout and a persistent damp smell in a Dubai bathroom almost certainly indicate active mould growth, driven by the high humidity and condensation. You can attempt a DIY clean for a small, surface-level issue, but your case, especially with the odour spreading to the bedroom, suggests a deeper problem that often requires professional assessment.

For a DIY attempt, use a dedicated grout cleaner or a paste of baking soda and vinegar. Scrub thoroughly with a stiff brush. However, this only addresses surface stains. If the mould has penetrated the porous grout or is growing behind the tiles due to a hidden leak—common in bathrooms here—it will return quickly. The musty smell permeating another room is a significant red flag for more extensive colonization.

Given the UAE's climate, where AC systems recirculate air, spores from the bathroom can spread, potentially affecting indoor air quality throughout the en-suite area. A professional inspection can identify the moisture source, assess the extent of the growth behind surfaces, and determine if the HVAC system has been contaminated. They use moisture meters and borescopes to see behind walls, which is crucial for a lasting solution. For verification, ensure any company you hire provides documented evidence of the problem and the results of their remediation, not just a visual clean.
