How to treat black mold in my AC-cooled closet?« Back to Previous Page

My master bedroom closet on the inside wall has a few small patches of black mold that I just discovered while switching out my winter clothes. We’ve had the AC running constantly for months, and I'm worried the humidity is getting trapped back there. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and should I be using a dehumidifier in the room even with the AC on?

Black mold in a closet on an interior wall is a common issue in Dubai, primarily due to condensation forming on cold surfaces behind or within the wall, even with the AC running. The constant cooling creates a temperature differential that can lead to moisture buildup in poorly ventilated spaces.

For small patches (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem. Ensure the area is thoroughly dried after cleaning.

A dehumidifier is an excellent idea alongside your AC. While ACs remove some humidity, their primary function is cooling. A dedicated dehumidifier, especially in a closed room, will more effectively maintain an indoor humidity level below 60%, which is critical for preventing mold regrowth.

However, the mold on the wall surface is likely just the visible sign. The moisture source is probably hidden condensation within the wall cavity or a minor, unnoticed leak. If the mold returns after cleaning and using a dehumidifier, or if you notice a musty odor, a professional inspection is recommended. They use thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact source of hidden moisture and can perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species, which is important for determining the appropriate remediation protocol.
