Is DIY mold removal safe for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It started as a small patch a couple of months ago but has spread along the wall since our last AC service, and the room always feels damp. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call a professional if it's something I can clean myself with bleach. Is this a DIY job or do I definitely need to call in a mold remediation company in Dubai?

Given your children's symptoms and the pattern of growth, this is not a DIY job. The cough is a significant indicator that the mold is already affecting your family's health, and disturbing it for a cleanup could release a large number of spores, potentially worsening their respiratory issues.

The damp feeling and rapid spread since your AC service are major red flags. In Dubai's climate, this almost certainly points to a hidden moisture source, likely a condensate drain line leak from the AC unit or a breach in the external wall allowing humidity ingress. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it does not address the root moisture problem and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall, where the mold's root system (hyphae) continues to grow unseen.

Professional remediation is advised here. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of the water intrusion, which is the only way to prevent immediate recurrence. They will then contain the area to prevent spore spread, safely remove and dispose of contaminated porous materials like drywall, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. The final, critical step is a post-remediation verification test, often conducted by a third-party lab, to confirm the spore count in the room has returned to a safe, ambient level before you reopen the space. This scientific, evidence-based approach is the only way to ensure the environment is truly safe for your kids.
