Can I treat bathroom mold myself or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small black patch of mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's an interior wall, but the weird thing is it's the wall that backs onto our en-suite bathroom. I'm worried the dampness from the shower is seeping through, especially with the humidity lately. How urgent is it that I get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Small, visible surface mold on non-porous materials like tiles or grout can often be handled yourself with proper safety precautions. For a small patch in a closet, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mildew cleaner is more effective and safer than bleach, which mostly lightens the color and doesn't kill the root structure.

However, your situation likely requires a professional assessment. The mold is on an interior wall backing onto a bathroom, indicating a persistent moisture issue that DIY cleaning won't solve. In Dubai's climate, with high ambient humidity and year-round AC use, this dampness is probably due to condensation within the wall cavity or a small leak from the shower, both of which need proper diagnosis. Treating the surface mold without fixing the hidden moisture source guarantees it will return, often worse.

A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of the water intrusion behind the wall. This is critical, as the visible patch may only be a fraction of the actual growth. For a problem stemming from an adjacent wet area, remediation often involves controlled removal of affected drywall and insulation to prevent spores from spreading and to properly dry the structure. Given the bathroom is the suspected source, this falls under a serious case where professional intervention is strongly advised to protect your home's structure and indoor air quality.
