Could mold under stairs cause my child's cough?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a storage room under the stairs that I finally cleared out yesterday, and I found a huge patch of black mold on the back wall. Ever since, my youngest has had a runny nose and a nagging cough that won't go away. Could the mold from that room be causing her symptoms even if the door is usually kept closed?

Yes, the mold under your stairs could definitely be causing your child's cough and runny nose, even with the door closed. Mold releases microscopic spores and mycotoxins into the air that easily travel through small gaps, under doors, and into your home's HVAC system. Children, especially, are more vulnerable to these irritants, which can trigger persistent respiratory symptoms like the ones you're describing.

In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue. The combination of high humidity and year-round AC use creates significant temperature differences. A cool, dark, and poorly ventilated space like a storage room under the stairs is a prime location for condensation to form on walls, providing the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive unseen.

For a situation of this visible size, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify the moisture source—often a hidden plumbing leak or seepage from the foundation—and assess the extent of the growth. Remediation involves more than just wiping the surface; it requires fixing the water issue, safely removing the contaminated materials, and cleaning the air to prevent spores from spreading. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide the crucial step of testing to identify the mold species, which informs the proper remediation protocol and helps confirm the environment is safe again after cleanup. Addressing the root cause is the only way to prevent it from returning.
