How to treat mold in my bedroom and stop it?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be mold. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I've just noticed a few small black spots spreading along the bottom corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the wardrobe. It's the wall that faces the outside and I'm worried the humidity is seeping in. What's the best way to treat this myself to stop it from spreading, and should I get a dehumidifier for that room?

Treating mold in a bedroom with the symptoms you describe requires addressing both the visible growth and its underlying cause. For the small black spots behind the wardrobe, start by carefully cleaning the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling spores. After cleaning, allow the wall to dry completely.

The primary issue is almost certainly moisture seeping through the external wall, a common problem in Dubai's humid climate, especially in older villas. A dehumidifier can help manage the room's ambient humidity, but it is a temporary solution that doesn't fix the structural penetration. For a lasting result, the external wall needs to be inspected for cracks or failed waterproofing and properly sealed.

Given that your children are coughing, this indicates that spores are likely airborne. Surface cleaning alone may not address the full extent of contamination. The wall cavity behind could be affected. For health concerns and suspected hidden growth, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is recommended to assess the wall's condition. A lab analysis of a tape-lift sample can also identify the mold type, which is crucial information if health symptoms persist.

The Dubai Municipality has clear guidelines on building maintenance to prevent such dampness. Ultimately, stopping the spread requires eliminating the moisture source, which often means external repairs followed by internal remediation.
