How to treat and prevent black mold in humid Bur Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom wall behind the wardrobe has these dark, speckled patches that have gotten worse since the weather turned humid. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai, and I'm worried it's black mold. We run the AC constantly, but there's still a damp feeling in that corner. What's the most effective way to treat this myself and what should I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The most effective way to treat the mold yourself depends on the extent of the growth. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a commercial mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, simply cleaning the visible stain is a temporary fix. The damp feeling indicates an ongoing moisture source, likely condensation from your AC unit's cold air hitting the warmer wall, a common issue in older Bur Dubai buildings with less insulation.

To stop it from coming back, you must address the humidity and lack of air circulation. Move the wardrobe at least a few inches away from the wall to allow air to flow behind it. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly; a clogged drain line can raise indoor humidity. Use a dehumidifier in the room or run your AC's dry mode consistently, as constant cooling without dehumidification can sometimes exacerbate the problem in our coastal climate.

Given the location and persistent dampness, this is likely a recurring issue that requires professional assessment. The wall cavity itself may be compromised. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and thermal imaging, can identify the exact condensation point or any hidden leaks. For a definitive identification and to understand the health risk, the mold should be lab-tested. Many companies, including ours with its microbiology lab, can provide this analysis to guide the correct remediation strategy, which is crucial for a long-term solution.
