Should we remove black mold in son's room ourselves?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our son's bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. With the humidity lately, it seems to have gotten worse, and my youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. I'm really worried it's connected. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this ourselves, or should we call a professional company here in Dubai?

It depends on the size and severity. For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface, careful DIY removal is possible. However, given it's in a bedroom and you're seeing health symptoms, proceeding with caution is critical.
First, identify and fix the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an AC unit's cold air hitting a warm wall, a hidden plumbing leak, or humidity seeping from an adjacent bathroom. Without solving this, the mold will return. Move the boxes and check for any dampness or water stains. For DIY, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the bottom with tape. Scrub the visible mold with a dedicated mold removal cleaner or a solution of diluted white vinegar, then dry the area thoroughly with a fan. Never use bleach, as it can exacerbate respiratory issues and doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces. If the mold covers a larger area, is inside the drywall, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden water source you might miss. A certified company can also perform air quality testing to identify the spore types and concentrations, which is crucial for confirming if it's the cause of your child's symptoms. In many cases, improper DIY can disturb the colony and spread spores, worsening the air quality problem. |
