Is AC mold causing my child's stuffy nose?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the master bedroom has been leaking a bit and now we’ve found black spots along the bottom of the wardrobe. My youngest has been waking up with a stuffy nose for the past week and I’m really worried it’s connected. What’s the best way to get this properly cleaned and treated in a way that’s safe for the kids?

It is very possible the AC mold is contributing to your child's stuffy nose. Mold spores released from the AC unit are a common irritant, and children are often more sensitive to these airborne particles. The black spots on the wardrobe are a clear visual indicator of a moisture problem, likely from the AC leak, which has created the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.

For a situation involving persistent symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. In Dubai's humid climate, AC systems are a primary source of indoor mold, and improper handling can aerosolize spores throughout the room. A certified inspector can identify the exact species present and the full extent of the contamination, which is often hidden within the AC unit itself or the wall behind the wardrobe.

The most effective approach is source removal, not just surface cleaning. This involves fixing the AC leak first to prevent recurrence. The contaminated materials, like the back panel of the wardrobe, may need to be carefully removed and disposed of. Surrounding areas should be HEPA-vacuumed and wiped with antimicrobial solutions. Merely spraying a bleach solution is ineffective and can exacerbate the problem by adding moisture.

For safety during remediation, the room should be sealed off with plastic sheeting, and the family, especially children, should avoid the area until clearance testing confirms the spore count has returned to normal levels. Reputable providers should be able to conduct this post-remediation verification, often through a third-party lab, to give you peace of mind that the environment is safe.
