Black mold in bedroom: clean ourselves or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black specks spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It's right above the window, and the wall sometimes feels a bit damp when the AC isn't running. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose for the past month and my wife says her allergies are acting up. Is this something we need to get professionally treated immediately, or can we clean it ourselves this weekend?

Given the dampness, your symptoms, and the location above a window, this requires immediate professional assessment. In Dubai's climate, persistent condensation from AC units is a primary cause of such growth. The damp wall suggests an ongoing moisture issue that must be resolved first; otherwise, the mold will return quickly even if you clean the visible spots.

Cleaning it yourself is not advised. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your allergy symptoms and spreading the problem to other areas of your home. Over-the-counter sprays often only bleach the visible colour, leaving the root structure intact.

A professional inspection will identify the moisture source—likely condensation from the AC ductwork or a leak—and the mold species. This is critical, as some types require specific remediation protocols. In the UAE, reputable companies follow international standards (IICRC) and should provide a lab report from a certified microbiology lab identifying the species, which dictates the remediation method.

For your health and to prevent structural damage, get a professional diagnosis. They will address the root cause, safely remove the contamination, and verify with post-remediation testing that the space is truly clean.
