Safely remove black mold from humid villa closet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and I’ve just found patches of black mold in the back of their bedroom closet, where we store their winter clothes. Our villa in Mirdif seems to trap a lot of humidity, especially after the recent heavy rains. What’s the safest way to clean this up myself without risking my family’s health?

Black mold in a humid Mirdif villa closet is a common issue, especially after heavy rains when humidity gets trapped indoors. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely.

First, contain the area. Keep the kids and anyone with asthma or allergies out of the room. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and rubber gloves. Open a window for ventilation if possible. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water in a spray bottle—avoid bleach as it only removes the color and can worsen airborne spores. Spray the moldy area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Wipe clean with damp cloths you intend to discard. Place all cleaning materials in a sealed bag before disposing.

The high villa humidity is the root cause. That closet likely has poor air circulation. Run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure your AC is functioning correctly, as it is your primary tool for removing moisture from Dubai's air. Keep closet doors ajar and avoid overpacking to improve airflow.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the problem is likely deeper within the wall or under the flooring. In these cases, or if the coughing persists, a professional inspection with moisture mapping and air quality testing is strongly recommended to identify the full extent of the issue.
